In pharmaceutical solid dosage forms, pharmaceutical-grade xanthan gum acts as a highly effective hydrophilic matrix polymer. When the tablet enters the gastrointestinal track and contacts gastric fluid, the xanthan particles on the tablet's outermost surface instantly hydrate to form a dense, viscous gel layer. This robust barrier is highly resistant to mechanical erosion and fluid penetration. Soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) must slowly diffuse through this hydrated gel layer to be released into the body. A major clinical benefit of xanthan gum is that its structural behavior remains highly uniform and consistent across both acidic gastric and alkaline intestinal fluids, ensuring predictable, extended drug delivery.
