What grade of Gellan Gum is required for plant tissue culture and microbiological media, and why?

Plant tissue culture and microbiological media require an ultra-clarified, high-purity Low Acyl (LA) Gellan Gum (often matching or exceeding the standards of Sigma's Phytagel).

It must feature:

  • Gel Clarity: more than 85% transmittance, allowing clear visual inspection of root growth or bacterial colonies.

  • Low Background Ions: Extremely low mineral ash content so it does not interfere with the precise nutrient balance of MS (Murashige and Skoog) media.

  • High Gel Strength: Usually more than 1000 g/cm2 at the concentration (0.5%) to provide a firm, stable matrix for agar replacement.
